Wrapping Up

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College softball team finished up their Spring Break trip on Thursday with a 4-6 mark by splitting two games against Dakota State and Saint Joseph's of Long Island. 

In the opener, the Bears defeated Dakota State by a 4-1 score, before falling to St. Joseph's by a score of 1-0.  

In game 1, the Bears on the arm of senior pitcher Catlin Whelan as she went seven innings, giving up one run, three hits and striking out three batters.

The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a fielder's choice, but the Bears came back in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.  The Bears runs came from junior outfielder Deanna Madison taking home plate after a wild pitch, and a RBI Single from junior outfielder Delia Mercurio scoring junior infielder Ellen Goldstein.

Ursinus put away the game in the top of the seventh with a Whelan single scoring Goldstein and an overthrow by the shortstop to allow sophomore Zoe Heinke to score the Bears final run.

Against St. Joseph's, a throwing error in the fifth inning allowed the lone run of the game to score. The loss spoiled a dominant performance by Heinke, who struck out nine. 

Ursinus returns home to take on Lebanon Valley Tuesday in a double header.
