Softball goes 1-1 on Day three in South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus softball team (2-4) split a pair of games  on Tuesday falling to Bridgewater College (10-2) 7-1 and defeating Penn College (2-1) 2-1 at Grand Park.


The Bears were led by Zoe Heinke going seven innings in game two with six strike outs and no walks.

Delia Mercurio led the Bears offense for the day going 3-7 with a double, run scored 2 RBI's.

Against Bridgewater College, pitcher Catlin Whelan held the Eagles in a close game only trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, until Lauren Jenkins hit a three-run home run to push the game out of reach for the Bears.

In Game 2, the Bears put on a strong defensive performance with Whalen starting off a 5 -4 -3 double play in the top of the 4th, and Heinke striking out the last batter to end the inning. 

Mercurio opened up the bottom of the fourth with a stand up double and advanced to third on a Whalen single.  Mercurio would score the go ahead run on an error by the shortstop taking the lead 1-0.

The Wildcats tied it up in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly. The Bears came back in the bottom of the seventh inning loading the bases on a single from Ellen Goldstine, a single from Deanna Madison, and an error by the pitcher to put Casey Derella on first. With the bases loaded, Mercurio drove the pitch between the third baseman and shortstop for a single to drive in the winning run.

The Bears will be back in action again Wednesday morning against SUNYIT  facing the Wildcats for the first time this trip, followed by a game with Mount Aloysius.
