Softball falls to Haverford, 10-5, in 14 innings

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Meeting to play just one inning, Haverford and Ursinus played four more as the Fords (21-11, 8-6 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (11-19, 6-8 Centennial) 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon in the completion of a game that was suspended last Tuesday in the tenth inning due to darkness.

The Fords cracked the game open in the 14th, scoring five runs on their way to earn the series split. The Fords scored as many runs in that inning than they had in the previous 14 combined.

Still, the final five innings were full of excitement including diving catches by various players which saved runs and saw each team match their run output in the inning.

With Haverford leading 3-2 in the top of the tenth with one out, Ursinus was able to get out of the jam as senior starting pitcher Kelly Schymanski struck out Kristin Tatum  and then got Stephanie Wolfson to pop up to end the inning.

With the two teams using the international tie breaker rule, which placed the last batter to get out in the previous inning on second, Ursinus got a bunt single from senior shortstop Amy Gentile which moved junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis to third. Gentile stole second, and the throw went wild allowing Bonitatis to score tying the score. Gentile would later get out on a double play, and Schymanski went out on a ground out sending the game to the 11th.

In the 11th, Haverford scored when Elizabeth Newman singled home Gabrielle Sapienza to give the Fords a 4-3 lead. A diving catch by sophomore centerfielder Delia Mercurio with two outs got the Bears out of the inning.

In the bottom of the 11th, Mercurio would ground out to second, but, allowed Schymanski to score tying the score up at 4-all.

In the 12th, both teams would score again as Haverford got a run on a throwing error, while Ursinus got a RBI double by freshman pitcher/flex player Zoe Heinke.

In the 13th, Ursinus kept Haverford off the board on a great double play. With one out, Gabrielle Sapienza flew out to right field. Junior right fielder Caitlin Whelan threw a bullet to senior catcher Emelie McFarland who tagged pinch runner Miwa Wenzel out at home. In the bottom of the inning, Ursinus got Schymanski bunted over third, but, could not get her across.

An error in the top of the 14th allowed Haverford to put runners on the corners with no outs. From there, Newman had a RBI single that scored Sapienza, followed by a two-run single to center from Jen DiCandilo that scored Newman and Jill Schnall.

Wolfson would end the inning with a two-run double to center that scored Tatum and DiCandilo to give the Fords the final margin.

For Haverford, Newman, Sarah Brody and DiCandilo each had three hits, while Newman had three RBI.

Ursinus got two hits each from Gentile, senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer and Heinke.

In the circle, Sara Taurillo got the win as she pitched 13 of the 14 innings. She struck out eight and walked two, with all four of her runs allowed unearned. Junior Claire Fitzgerald pitched the ninth inning and allowed the tying run.

For Ursinus, Schymanski went 13.2 innings, the longest outing in school history. She struck out three and walked three while allowing four earned runs. Heinke pitched the last part of the 14th.

Ursinus heads to Delaware Valley on Thursday, before finishing with Swarthmore on Saturday.
