Softball downs Haverford in thriller, 5-4

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus scored twice in the bottom of the eighth innings giving the Bears (11-16, 6-5 Centennial) a 5-4 win over Haverford (18-11, 5-6 Centennial) in softball action on Tuesday. 

The winner in game two was darkness as the game was halted in the top of the tenth inning with Haverford leading 3-2. The game will be resumed at a later date. 

In game one, Haverford took a 1-0 lead when Sarah Brody tripled to right field scoring Elizabeth Newman.

Ursinus answered right back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own, starting with a double from senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Pope John XXIII) that scored senior shortstop Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley). 

An error on a hit ball by senior catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) allowed Pfrommer to score to make it 2-1, followed by an RBI ground out from junior right fielder Caitlin Whelan that scored senior starting pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown). 

Haverford scored two more to tie the score in the fifth when Dayle Comerford singled scoring Brody and Newman. 

The Fords took the lead in the eighth on a bases loaded walk that scored Lauren Touey. 

Freshman designated player Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J/Phillipsburg) came up with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth when she doubled to left scoring centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington) and pinch runner Deanna Madison

Pfrommer finished the opener with two hits. Schymanski got the win, improving to 6-8 as she struck out three and walked three in eight innings of work.
