Softball splits with Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team split a pair of games against Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference doubleheader.

The Bears took game one in wild fashion as they scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win, while Gettysburg (13-13) scored late in a 9-5 win over Ursinus (9-13, 4-4 Centennial) in game two.

Game one saw the two teams tied after the first inning, as Gettysburg struck first with a RBI double from junior third baseman Maggie Maguire. Ursinus answered back as junior right fielder Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) singled home senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) with two out.

Ursinus took a 2-1 lead in the third as Schymanski drove in senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) on a sacrifice fly.

After Gettysburg tied the score in the top of the fourth, Ursinus scored one in the bottom of the fifth as Schymanski scored on a groundout by Whelan.

Gettysburg and Ursinus would both add runs in the sixth, before Ursinus won the game in the bottom of the seventh. After loading the bases, senior second baseman Kelsey Coyne (Stowe, Pa./Pottstown) scored on a fielders choice and a throwing error by the catcher with two outs.

Pfrommer finished with two hits, while Schymanski scored two runs. Schymanski also got the win, striking out one and walking one in moving to 5-6.

In game two. Ursinus fell behind 4-0 before scoring five runs in the bottom of the second as senior shortstop Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) and Pfrommer had two-run singles, while sophomore centerfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) had a run-scoring single in the inning.

However, Gettysburg would add runs in the fourth and sixth, before plating three runs in the sevnth to put the game out of reach.

Pfrommer and Gentile each finished with three hits in game two.

Schymanski took the loss in relief of freshman starter Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg). Heinke went 1.2 innings, striking out one and walking two. Schymanski went 5.1 innings, striking out one and walking three.
