Softball drops doubleheader to Alvernia

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team dropped a pair of games to Alvernia in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.

Game one saw the Crusaders win 6-1, while Alvernia (19-3) defeated Ursinus (8-12) 11-1 in five innings in game two.

Alvernia took an 6-0 lead after four innings as senior first baseman Danielle Kitchen went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Freshman catcher Aly Shilling, junior short stop Katie Manowski and freshman third baseman Briana Coan each had two hits in the win.

For Ursinus, the Bears their lone run in the sixth inning as junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) hit a sacrifice fly that scored senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown).
Schymanski took the loss, falling to 4-6. She struck out one and allowed five earned runs.

In game two, Alvernia scored in every inning, including a five-run fourth inning capped by a three-run triple from pinch hitter Jenna Marburger. 

Ursinus got a run in the fourth when senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) homered to right center with one out in the inning. She finished 2-for-2 with a run scored. 

Freshman pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) took the loss, as she gave up seven earned runs in the three innings of work. Junior pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) pitched two innings in relief, allowing one earned run.

Ursinus hosts Gettysburg on Saturday.
