Softball sweeps F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team moved to 3-1 in the Centennial Conference with a  sweep of Franklin & Marshall on Thursday afternoon.

In game one, the Bears won 11-6 while in game two, Ursinus (8-6, 3-1 Centennial) defeated the Diplomats (4-12, 0-4) by a 8-1 score.

In game one, Ursinus exploded for eight runs in the top of the third as two errors by F&M led to runs, while freshman second baseman Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) and senior shortstop Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) had two-hits with Gentile hitting a two-run triple. Sopomore center fielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) and senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) had RBI hits as well in the frame.

In the fifth, senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) had a RBI single, helping her own cause. In the seventh, Ursinus added two more runs as Pfrommer scored on a wild pitch and Schymanski scored on a RBI triple by senior catcher Emeile McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century).

Gentile finished the game 4-for-5 with a run scored, while Schymanski was 3-for-5. Right fielder Caitlin Whelan had 2-for-4 performance with a run scored. Gentile and Heinke each had two RBI.

Schymanski got the win, striking out four and walking one.

In game two, Ursinus struck with two in the first, one in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Gentile was a home run short of the cycle in game two, while Schymanski went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Whelan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Heinke and junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) each had two RBI.

Heinke pitched seven innings of five-hit softball to earn the win.

Ursinus hosts Moravian on Friday.
