Softball swept by Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – Playing their first of three straight doubleheaders in as many days, Ursinus dropped a pair of games to Rowan University on Wednesday.

In game one, the Bears lost 12-3 in five innings, while Ursinus (6-6) was blanked in game two, 6-0.

In the opener, Ursinus tied the score at 1-all in the top of the second as sophomore outfielder Delia Mercurio (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) had a RBI single that scored junior right fielder Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXII). Ursinus would score two more in the fourth as junior shortstop Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and senior designated player Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) would get RBIs.

Mercurio would grab two hits on the day, while Whelan, sophomore left fielder Ellen Goldstein (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) all scored runs.

Freshman pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) took the loss, falling to 3-2. In 2.1 innings, she struck out one and walked six.

Game two saw Rowan (15-3) score three times in the first inning and two more in the fifth. Senior shortstop Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) had two hits, as did Pfrommer. Senior Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) took the loss, falling to 2-3. She struck out two.

Ursinus heads to F&M on Thursday, before hosting Moravian on Friday.
