Softball splits with Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – Playing for the first time in almost two weeks, the Ursinus College softball team split a doubleheader against Dickinson at historic Dickinson Park on Saturday afternoon. 

In game one, Ursinus defeated the Red Devils 4-3 while in the night cap, Dickinson (7-7, 1-1 Centennial) returned the favor in game two by winning 4-3 over the Bears (6-4, 1-1 Centennial)

In game one, Ursinus took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as sophomore Delia Mercurio (Sykesville, Md./Century) reached on a fielder's choice that scored freshman Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) and junior Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII). 

In the third, senior starting pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) helped her own cause as she hit a two-run home run that scored junior Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill).

Dickinson would score one in the fifth on a home run by Carly Jordan, then scored two in the seventh on a double that scored Nicole Piet and a sacrifice fly that scored Becca Garlinger. 

Ursinus had just two hits in the game, but, Schymanski held Dickinson to just one earned run and struck out two.

Game two saw Ursinus take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Heinke doubled scoring Schymanski. Dickinson would respond back with a RBI single from Garlinger in the second, then take a 2-1 lead in the third on a RBI single by Piet. 

In the fifth, Ursinus got a run when Bonitatis drove in freshman Meredith Watters (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville), followed by a RBI double from senior Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) that scored Bonitatis.

Dickinson scored two in the bottom of the seventh as Casey Ditzler doubled to score Katie Swade to tie the score, then Ditzler came home on a RBI single by Denise Haines. 

Heinke took the loss, striking out two and walking one on the day.

Ursinus is scheduled to play Elizabethtown on Monday.
