Winding It Up

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College softball team finished up its southern swing with a 5-3 mark as the Bears split a pair of games at Snowbird Softball on Thursday.

In game one, the Bears lost to Randolph 9-2 before defeating PSU-Hazleton 11-3 in six innings in game two.

In the opener, senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Pope John XXIII) went 2-for-3 with a RBI, while senior catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century) went 2-for-3 with a RBI on a home run to center field in the sixth inning. Pfrommer had a RBI triple in the first that scored junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill).

Senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown)) took the loss, as she struck out two and walked three in 3.1 innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Bears pounded out 14 hits as they scored nine runs in the last two innings to end the game early.

Pfrommer and junior right fielder Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXII) each had three hits, as did freshman pitcher Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg). McFarland had a three-run home run in the fifth, as she and Whelan each had three RBI. Pfrommer also had three runs scored.

Heinke went six innings, striking out eight and walking one.

Ursinus goes to Lebanon Valley on Tuesday.
