Softball drops pair at Day One of Snowbird

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ursinus College softball team opened up the 2013 season on Monday morning by dropping a pair of games at the Snowbird Softball Classic.

The Bears dropped their lidlifter to York (Pa.) 6-5, while being defeated by King's, 8-0 in five innings in game two.

In the first game, freshman second baseman Zoe Heinke (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double, while senior pitcher Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) scored two runs while going 1-for-3 with a run driven in.

Trailing by one run after the first inning, Ursinus plated two in the bottom of the first as junior third baseman Monica Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) scored on a passed ball, then senior first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional)  scored on a RBI groundout by Schymanski.

After the Spartans tied it in the top of the fourth, Ursinus took a 3-2 lead when Heinke doubled to left scoring Schymanski.

York used the long ball in the top of the sixth to take the lead at 4-3, before Ursinus answered back with two of runs of their own in the bottom of the frame as Schymanski and sophomore designated player Nikki Djambinov (Ventnor City, N.J./Atlantic City) scored on a two-run single by Heinke.

In the top of the seventh, York loaded the bases and scored two runs off of Schymanski, including the game-winning sacrifice fly with one out.

Schymanski took the loss, striking out seven and walking one in seven innings.

In game two, Schymanski and senior catcher Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, N.J./Century) each had two hits.

Junior pitcher Caitlin Whelan (Stanhope, N.J./Pope John XXIII) took the loss, as she struck out two and walked two in 1.1 innings of work.

Ursinus continues play on Tuesday in South Carolina, as they double dip with Penn State-Harrisburg and Penn State-Hazleton.
