COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team locked up home field advantage for the upcoming Centennial Conference playoffs with a sweep of Haverford on Thursday afternoon.

In the first game, Ursinus rallied from an early deficit to win 2-1, while the Bears (25-5, 13-1 Centennial) held the Fords (14-16, 6-8 Centennial) to just one hit in game two for a 4-0 win.

Two milestones were set on Thursday, as senior pitcher Lauren Davis-Macedonia (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) became the ninth player in NCAA history to strikeout 1,000 batters as she struck out Haverford's Gabrielle Sapienza with one out in the fifth inning of game two. Davis-Macedonia now has 1,001 strikeouts in her career.

Also, the two wins moved head coach Terry McGowan's win total up to 300 for his career, as he is now 300-101-2.

As for the first game, Haverford took a 1-0 lead in the fourth as left field Beth Davis reached on an error, then later scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Laura Iwanyk.

In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore pinch hitter Rachael Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) hit a home run with one out in the inning to tie the score at 1-all.

Ursinus won the game in the bottom of the seventh as freshman center fielder Caitlin Higgins (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) tripled to start the inning, the scored on a RBI single by freshman first baseman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional).

Davis-Macedonia got the win in game one, as she struck out eight and allowed just two hits. Cassandra Searls took the loss for Haverford, but, struck out six.

In game two, Ursinus took a 1-0 lead in the first as Pfrommer scored on a RBI single by freshman shortstop Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan).

The Bears added a run in the fourth as sophomore right fielder Kelly Kalovcak (Pottsville, Pa./Minersville Area) scored on a passed ball.

Ursinus tacked on two more in the sixth as freshman pinch runner Kelsey Coyne (Stowe, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored on a RBI triple by Higgins, while Higgins later scored on a RBI double by freshman left fielder Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley).

Gentile, Pfrommer, Jerdan and sophomore designated hitter Kate Kahoe (Mariposa, Calif./Mariposa County) each had two hits in the win.

Davis-Macedonia got the win in game two, fanning eight. Maggie Cronin took the loss for Haverford in game two, allowing two runs in four innings.

Ursinus hosts Muhlenberg Saturday.
