Softball sweeps two from Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Playing its first doubleheader in almost a week, the Ursinus College softball team scored an important sweep as the Bears defeated Swarthmore on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears won the first game 5-0, while Ursinus (12-2, 2-0 Centennial) got a run on an error in the top of the seventh in a 2-1 win over the Garnet (8-14, 1-3 Centennial).

In game one, Ursinus took a 1-0 lead after the third as sophomore outfielder Kelly Kalovcak (Pottsville, Pa./Minersville Area) had a RBI single. In the fourth, freshman outfielder Caitlin Higgins (Mickleton, N.J./Kingsway Regional) had a run scoring bunt.

The Bears put two more on the fifth as junior designated hitter Jamie Miles (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) had a two-run single.

In the seventh, Higgins had her second RBI of the afternoon.

Senior pitcher Lauren Davis-Macedonia (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) went the distance in game one, allowing just six hits. She struck out eight and walked two.

In the nightcap, Ursinus got the winning run across in the seventh as junior outfielder Liz Lowes (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) scored on an error by Garnet pitcher Angelica Sanchez.

The Bears won despite only having three hits in game two. Davis-Macedonia had seven strikeouts and walked just one.
