16th-ranked Softball defeats Neumann

ASTON, Pa. – The Ursinus College softball team, newly minted as the 16th team in the country by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA), swept a non-conference double header from Neumann Wednesday afternoon.

In game one, the Bears won 1-0 in eight innings while the Bears (8-0) defeated the Knights (2-10) 11-1 in game two.

In the opener, Ursinus scored the lone run in the top of the eighth inning as sophomore Abby Sido (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) singled home freshman Emelie McFarland (Sykesville, Md./Century). The inning was kept alive by an error by the Knights.

The Knights did get a runner to third in the bottom half of the inning, but, could not advance the runner.

Senior pitcher Lauren Davis-Macedonia (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) scattered three hits over eight innings to improve to 6-0. She struck out 15 and walked two.

For the Bears, Sido finished 2-for-4, while junior Kristin Gallagher (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) was 2-for-3. Freshman Amy Gentile (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) also finished 2-for-4, as did McFarland.

In game two, the Bears took a 6-1 lead after two innings and never looked back.

Sophomore Kelly Kalovcak (Pottsville, Pa./Minersville) was 3-for-4 with five RBI, including a three-run triple in the second. Freshman Allison Pfrommer (Franklinville, N.J./Delsea Regional) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while freshman Kelli Jerdan (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Gentile also finished 2-for-6, as did sophomore Rachel Vietheer (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage).

Freshman Jennilyn Weber (Valley View, Pa./Tri-Valley) got the win, striking out six in five innings of work. Pfrommer pitched two innings in relief, striking out one.

Ursinus hosts Susquehanna on Saturday.
