ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Nick Galbraith continued to establish himself as king of the hammer on the first day of the Centennial Conference outdoor championship, pairing a gold medal with a school record to get the Ursinus College men's track and field team off to a strong start at Muhlenberg.
At day's end, Ursinus had tallied 14.5 points and stood in fifth place.
Galbraith, the champion of the first hammer competition at the indoor meet, completed his double with a dominant effort that saw him etch his name atop the program record book and become the first outdoor hammer gold medalist in school history. The rookie's heave of 132 feet, 6 inches was over six feet clear of the runner-up – and even more impressive, it happened on his first attempt.
Sophomore George Psaradakis backed Galbraith by placing sixth (112-02), tacking on three points to the Bears' tally.
Freshman Gary Nagle put a bow on a strong opening salvo with a massive PR in the pole vault, eclipsing his previous best by nearly a full foot to place seventh at 12-11.5.
Junior Brody Johnson completed the first half of the decathlon in fine fashion, placing second with a PR in both the 100 (11.72) and 400 (53.04). He was fourth in the long jump (18-00.25) and fifth in both the high jump (4-10.50) and shot put (25-6.75).
Senior Andrew Voyack (33:51.80) and junior Daniel Powell (34:12.95) each shattered their former personal bests in the 10000 meters to place 12th and 14th, respectively.
