Men's Track and Field Shines in Season Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's track and field team started the indoor season with a bang on Saturday, capturing the team title at its annual Bow Tie Classic.

The Bears had four individual champions on the way to 112.50 points, 18 more than second-place Lincoln. Junior Adam Myers (shot put), sophomore Sam Pope (triple jump), freshman James McDaid (mile), and freshman Andre Kelly (800) all claimed first place in their respective events.

Myers put up a personal indoor best 45-1.75 in the shot put, a full 2.60 feet better than King's Matt Vines in second.

Pope, the defending Centennial Conference indoor and outdoor champion in the triple jump, picked up right where he left off as a rookie with a first-place effort in the event. His mark of 45-3.50 was eight inches ahead of Delaware Valley's Ta'riq Thomas. Thomas returned the favor in the long jump, edging Pope (21-2.75) by eight inches.

McDaid, meanwhile, took home a victory in a thrilling mile race that came down to the final steps. The rookie edged Catholic's Joey LaPointe by just .09 seconds with a clocking of 4:43.60. Fellow freshman John Haase was third in 4:49.09, and senior Luke Schlegel (4:50.95) was close behind in fourth place.

Kelly joined the Bears' impressive set of collegiate debuts with a first-place time of 2:04.07 in the 800-meter run, almost 2.50 seconds in front of his nearest competition. Junior Mitchell Kelly placed fifth in 2:09.23.

The Bears went 2-3-4 in the 5,000 meters, with junior Joseph Iuliucci (16:24.60) in second, sophomore Andrew Voyack (16:54.89) in third, and freshman Logan Mazullo (17:05.15) in fourth.

Junior Jequan Mitchell claimed third place in the 60-meter dash with a mark of 7.10 seconds. Junior Connor Lent took third in the 500 (1:14.51), and freshman Codi Yhap was fourth in the 400 (1:14.51). Freshman Austin Bittenbender finished sixth in the 200-meter dash (23.60).

The Bears have plenty of time off before hosting the Collegeville Classic on Saturday, January 21.
