Fontanese, Groff Make ITA Quarters

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Matt Fontanese and Mason Groff decided to make more history on the final day of the ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday.

The Bears' top tandem defeated Matthew Dubuque and Bently Goodwin to become the first players in program history to reach the quarterfinals of championship doubles at the ITA regional. Already having knocked off Haverford's first team on Friday, Fontanese and Groff grabbed an 8-4 victory in the round of 16 before their magical run came to an end with an 8-2 loss at the hands of Johns Hopkins' Vishnu Joshi and Vikram Vasan.

Groff lost his consolation match in championship singles by a narrow 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 score line against Goucher's Tetsuya Ota.

Fontanese, meanwhile, nearly advanced to the finals of B4 singles but fell a few points short in a 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 battle with Goucher's Brian Kane.

Connor DeFaber-Schumacher and Noah Mendel lost an 8-5 decision against Jack Fishwick and Grayson White of Roanoke in the consolations of the B2 doubles draw.
