Men's Tennis Recognizes Four ITA Scholar Athletes; Team Also Honored

TEMPE, Ariz. – Four members of the Ursinus College men's tennis team earned 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete honors. Matt Fontanese, Mason Groff, Simbarashe Kanjanda, and Jake Lachowicz were all recognized for their work in the classroom.

In addition, the men were recognized with an All-Academic Team award. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above.

Groff and Fontanese earn All-Academic honors for a second consecutive season. The Bears' No. 1 doubles pairing went 11-5 last season, including a team-best 4-4 record in the Centennial Conference. Groff also earned a 9-10 record at No. 1 singles while Fontanese went 10-9 at No. 3.

Kanjanda stepped into the starting lineup right away as a freshman last season. The rising sophomore played at No. 4 singles as well as No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Lastly, Lachowicz was recognized for his efforts in the classroom by the ITA for the third-time. Lachowicz put together a stellar senior season last year in which he recorded a career-high 10 wins at No. 5 singles and eight wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
