Groff Wins Twice for Men's Tennis

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mason Groff won both of his matches, but those were the only points the Ursinus College men's tennis match could muster in its final Centennial Conference home match of the season, a 7-2 defeat at the hands of Muhlenberg.

Groff and fellow sophomore Matt Fontanese improved to 10-4 overall and ran their conference record to 4-3 at No. 1 doubles, handling the Mules' top pairing by a count of 8-2 as the Bears (7-10, 2-6) grabbed the first match off the courts.

Muhlenberg won the remaining two doubles tilts, including a tight 8-6 battle at No. 2, to take a 2-1 lead into singles play and took control from there. The Mules (6-8, 3-5) won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 5, and No. 6 to clinch victory before Groff polished off his double with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Noah Sellinger at No. 1.

Fontanese drew the short end of an 11-9 first-set tiebreak at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Kyle Bookman took his opponent to three sets before dropping a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5) decision at No. 6 singles.

The Bears play their final home match against Immaculata on Friday before wrapping up the regular season at Washington College on Saturday.
