Men's Tennis Flies Past Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team made it two wins in a row on Monday, grabbing a tiebreaker at second singles and first doubles and grabbing every set in between during a 9-0 sweep at Messiah.

Sophomores Mason Groff and Matt Fontanese shrugged off a strong test from Galen Fitzkee and Andrew Bookman at number one doubles, blanking the Falcons duo 7-0 in the tiebreaker after the teams were knotted at 7-games apiece.

Junior Connor DeFaber-Schumacher and senior Jake Lachowicz posted an 8-0 win at second doubles, with sophomore Kyle Bookman and freshman Simbarashe Kanjanda dropping just a single game in an 8-1 final at number three.

DeFaber-Schumacher survived the biggest challenge in singles play, shaking free of Alex Mantsevich by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 on the second court.

Groff dodged Fitzkee in a 6-3, 6-2 final on the first court, and Fontanese cruised past Bookman for a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number three.

Back on the singles court after some time off due to injury, Kanjanda earned his second victory of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 result at number four.

Lachowicz improved his team-best singles mark to 8-4 with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 defeat of Jarod Snader at number five, and Bookman's 6-2, 7-5 triumph at number six ensured the team sweep.

The men's tennis team heads to York (Pa.) for another non-conference match on Wednesday.
