Men's Tennis Shut Out by Goucher

TOWSON, Md. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team battled hard but was unable to prevent a sweep by host Goucher in a non-conference contest on Sunday.

Sophomore Matt Fontanese took his singles opponent to a third set and paired with classmate Mason Groff for a close match at first doubles for the Bears (3-5) against a strong Gophers squad.

Groff and Fontanese pushed Goucher's top doubles pairing to an 8-5 final at number one doubles, the tightest finish of the three matches.

On the singles courts, Fontanese took the first set, 6-3, from Frankie Mullinix at number three. But the Bears' sophomore fell, 6-1, in the second set and dropped a 10-4 decision in the super tiebreaker.

Junior Connor DeFaber-Schumacher was close to winning a set at second singles, but ultimately succumbed to a 6-2, 7-5 result.

The Bears head to nationally ranked Johns Hopkins for a Centennial Conference matchup on Saturday, March 30.
