Men's Tennis Edged Out in Florida Finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team nearly left Florida with a victory in tow, but a strong North Central team managed to eke out a 5-4 decision on Friday.

Sophomores Mason Groff and Matt Fontanese were double winners for the Bears (2-4), who took a 9-2 Cardinals squad down to the wire. They accounted for Ursinus' only doubles point, rolling to an 8-3 result at number one.

Groff cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 result on the first singles court, and Fontanese was a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victor at number three.

Senior Jake Lachowicz continued to be a rock at the back end of the lineup, tallying a 7-6 (4), 6-1 score for his fifth consecutive singles win.

North Central, however, captured the other three singles courts to earn the split it needed to edge out the Bears. Junior Connor DeFaber-Schumacher was closest to reversing the final result, but ultimately succumbed to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat at number two.

The Bears are back on campus to host Cabrini on Wednesday, March 20.
