Men's Tennis Hangs Tough at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team continued its doubles dominance in a tight non-conference match at MAC power Wilkes that ended in a 6-3 victory for the host Colonels.

The Bears (10-8) took two of three on the doubles courts before Wilkes responded by winning all but one singles match to improve to 16-5 overall.

Senior Max Oberholtzer and junior Paul Vecchio were first off the courts after toppling Andrew Neidig and Braddock Chow, 8-3, at number one. The win was the 67th of Vecchio's career, moving him into sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time charts.

Senior Peter Shields and freshman Mason Groff bounced back from their first dual loss of the season with a convincing 8-3 defeat of Gabriel Velez and Andrew MacDonald at number two. Shields is now the fifth Ursinus player to achieve 70 career wins and 40 doubles wins.

Groff, meanwhile, improved to 15-3 in doubles play and can match the single-season school record for doubles wins with a victory in Wednesday's finale at Cabrini.

Freshman Matt Fontanese rallied from a 7-6 (2) first-set loss to claim the second, 6-2, and hold off Ryan Simon by a 10-7 count in the super breaker at sixth singles.

Sophomore Connor DeFaber-Schumacher nearly took down Chris Maderitz at number five singles, but the Colonel rallied from a 7-5 deficit in the breaker to claim a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 triumph.

The men's tennis team finishes the season at Cabrini on Wednesday. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
