Men's Tennis Plays Fords Tough in Doubles

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Mason Groff and Connor DeFaber-Schumacher's thrilling victory at number two doubles highlighted the Ursinus College men's tennis team's performance in an 8-1 Centennial Conference loss to regionally ranked Haverford.

The Bears' duo staved off a late rally by Dais Naskayama and Kevin Yan to win the tiebreaker going away and notch an impressive 9-8 (1) win at number two doubles.

Haverford retained its perfect CC record at 5-0 and improved to 9-4 overall, while Ursinus fell to 9-5 overall and an even 3-3 in league play.

The Fords – ranked 12th in the Atlantic South Region – lost just 16 games in singles play, but doubles was a different story. The Bears had a 7-4 lead on each of the first two courts and would have taken a lead into singles if not for a comeback from Haverford's top tandem.

Senior Max Oberholtzer and junior Paul Vecchio had David Kong and Josh Moskovitz on the ropes, but were unable to finish them off and dropped a 7-1 decision in the pro-set tiebreaker.

The Bears resume CC competition at McDaniel on Saturday.
