Vecchio Nearly Spoils Swarthmore Sweep

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Paul Vecchio nearly pulled off a major victory against No. 21 Swarthmore on Thursday afternoon, but the Bears' junior fell in a third-set super tiebreaker as the Garnet secured a 9-0 Centennial Conference men's tennis sweep.

Vecchio took Thibault Vernier down to the wire at number two singles, battling back from a 6-0 shutout in the first set to take the second, 6-2. Vernier pulled out a 10-6 triumph in the super breaker to preserve the clean sweep for Swarthmore (5-7, 2-0).

Senior Max Oberholtzer, who earlier in the day checked in at No. 22 in the latest Atlantic South singles rankings to become the first Ursinus player to garner regional recognition, hung tough with Garnet star Mark Fallati in a 6-3, 6-4 decision at number one. Fallati is ranked fifth in the region in singles.

Fallati and Powell, the seventh-ranked duo in the Atlantic South, defeated Oberholtzer and Vecchio by an 8-3 count at first doubles. Sophomore Connor DeFaber-Schumacher and freshman Matt Fontanese lost 8-2 to John Lathrop and Evan Han at number two, while junior Jake Lachowicz and freshman Ryan Jang fell by the same score to Michael Song and Noah Cheng at number three.

The Garnet cruised at third through sixth singles, though none was a double bagel.

The men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday at Gettysburg.
