Men's Tennis Edges USMMA in Florida Finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus College men's tennis could team scripted the perfect ending to its spring trip, rallying back for a dramatic 5-4 victory over Merchant Marine in a match that came down to the last court.

Senior Peter Shields and Mason Groff carried the clinching point, punctuating a thrilling finish with an 8-5 win at number two doubles to give the Bears (5-1) a fourth win in five Florida matches.

Senior Max Oberholtzer and junior Paul Vecchio were both double winners for Ursinus, which jumped out to a 3-0 lead in singles play before the Mariners (1-2) took four in a row.

Junior Jake Lachowicz started with a crucial 6-3, 6-2 victory over Branden Deeter at number six singles. Oberholtzer followed with a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Jake McDonough at number one, and Vecchio handled Andrew Carey by a 6-2, 6-3 final on the second court.

Merchant Marine, however, won a pair of three-setters to go into doubles knotted at 3, and grabbed the lead for the first time with an 8-3 decision at third doubles.

Oberholtzer and Vecchio quickly got the Bears back on level ground, cruising to an 8-1 win over Barry Booth and Carey at number one doubles. That left the match in the hands of Shields and Groff, who brought Ursinus home by edging Daniel Zavreski and McDonough.

The men's tennis team is next in action at Cabrini on Thursday, March 15.
