Men's Tennis Slips Scots in Florida Finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Ursinus College men's tennis team put a bow on its spring break trip with a 7-2 victory in a competitive match with Monmouth (Ill.) on Thursday night.

Juniors Max Oberholtzer and Peter Shields joined senior Henry Burke as double winners for the Bears, who went 4-1 in Orlando for the week.

Burke and freshman Connor DeFaber-Schumacher dominated Cole Pyatt and Alex Martin, 8-0, at third doubles. Senior Chanton Phan and Shields submitted an 8-4 victory over Dylan Wong and Paulo Pliego at number two before Oberholtzer and sophomore Paul Vecchio toughed out a 9-7 thriller with Ronnie Griffin and Landon Walker on the top court.

Oberholtzer blasted Wong 6-2, 6-0 at number one singles, and freshman Devin Paulison succeeded him with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Pyatt to lock up the Ursinus victory.

Griffin and Walker got the Scots on the board at number two and number three singles, respectively, but Burke and Shields made sure the Bears ended the night on a high note. Burke netted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Pliego and Shields nipped Saxon Day 7-5, 7-5 in two tight sets.

The men's tennis team opens its home slate against Cabrini on Tuesday, March 14.
