LANCASTER, Pa. – Two program records and a silver medal highlighted the Ursinus College men's swimming team's performance on the second night of the Centennial Conference Championship on Friday.
The Bears ended the evening in fifth place in the team tally with 162 points, just 6.5 shy of fourth-place Swarthmore. Gettysburg owns a commanding advantage with 295.5 points.
Sophomore Casey Lear, junior Travis Venables, sophomore Jared Krawetz, and senior Colin McNamara reset the school record in the 200 free relay, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:25.10 to edge last year's mark by 0.33 ticks. Venables and McNamara were also a part of the previous standard-bearer, which came at last year's conference meet.
Menzer and younger brother Alec dueled in one of the most anticipated races of the weekend, going stroke for stroke in the 500 free. The younger Menzer ultimately claimed gold with an NCAA B cut mark of 4:30.70, while Jacob touched in 4:33.69 to attain a B cut and better his own previous school record of 4:34.52 from last year's championship.
Junior Johnathan Myers placed 13th with a 4:44.95, easily a personal best, and senior Christopher Barthold was right behind in 4:46.47.
Freshman Michael Prior landed in 15th place in the 200 IM at 1:58.90.
Venables finished 10th in the 50 free (21.50), and Lear was 12th (21.59).
Junior Devin Nielsen, Menzer, Coulter, and junior Daniel Becker placed third in the B final of the 200 free relay with a 1:28.23.
The CC championships resume Saturday morning with prelims in the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, and 100 back. The night session will also include the 400 medley relay.
