Men's Swimming Falls at Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team swam at Villanova Saturday, falling 170-90.

Two Bears placed atop the podium in separate events. First, sophomore Daniel Powell took first in the 1000 freestyle (10:09.61), putting up the second-best time on the team this season, and personal best on the year. Senior Christopher Barthold followed Powell, finishing third in the race (10:22.30).

Freshman Michael Prior was the other Bear to find himself on top of a podium, as he won the 200 back in 1:57.52. His time was just two seconds slower than the season-best time he put up at the West Chester Invitational earlier this season. Prior also earned a third-place finish as part the foursome that raced in the 200 medley relay to open the competition. Joining Prior in the group that finished in 1:40.08 were junior Devin Nielsen, senior Colin McNamara and junior Travis Venables.

McNamara left Villanova with three third-place finishes. After the 200 medley relay, he swam in the 200 fly (1:59.42) and 100 fly (54.44). Venables earned a second third-place finish, touching the wall in the 50 free in 22.01.

Sophomore Jacob Menzer was the lone Bear to finish second in an event. He touched second in the 500 free, clocking in a time of 4:50.37.

Sophomore Casey Lear and junior James Callaghan rounded out top-3 finishers for the Bears. Lear claimed third in the 100 free, finishing in 48.95 while Callaghan touched third in the 200 IM in 2:05.94.

The Bears are off until next Saturday when they travel to Franklin & Marshall. They're back in Collegeville on Feb. 3 to host Washington College.
