Men's Soccer Edged at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Another valiant effort from Tyler Lewin kept the Ursinus College men's soccer team in contention for a result, but a goal just past the half-hour mark stood up as Muhlenberg held on for a 1-0 Centennial Conference victory on Saturday.

Lewin finished with seven saves, including four in a span of eight first-half minutes as the Mules pushed hard for an opener. Denied time and again, the hosts broke through just past the half-hour when Chris Richards dodged Lewin to the left and sent a chip shot into the back of the net. That proved to be the lone marker of the day as Muhlenberg (8-4-2, 1-4-1) picked up its first conference win.

After allowing the first eight shots of the contest – five of them on target – the Bears (4-7-2, 0-5-1) began to gain traction following the opener. Alexis Ayala forced a pair of saves by the Mule keeper, and Luke Abdalla put a shot on target in the final minute of the first half, but to no avail.

Ursinus managed just one shot in the second half. The Mules nearly added a second goal at the death, when Lewin made a great diving save but saw the ball roll over the line. After initially ruled a goal, the referee reversed his decision and took it off the board as Muhlenberg settled for the 1-0 final.

The Mules posted a 13-4 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears wrap up their non-conference schedule at home against Penn State Berks on Tuesday.
