SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's soccer team recovered nicely from a lightning-quick opening goal by host Swarthmore in Centennial Conference action Wednesday night, answering with one of their own just a few minutes later. But after two hours' worth of lightning delays, the Garnet poured it on the rest of the way to a 5-1 victory.
Trevor Homstad dented the scoreboard a little over four minutes after kickoff for Swarthmore (6-3, 2-1), but freshman Samuel Adeniyi played in senior Ben Amaral with a through ball and the veteran made no mistake in logging his first goal of the season at the 7:53 mark.
The lightning came in the 27th minute with the teams still even at 1, and it was all Garnet when play resumed. Francis Eddy Harvey's stinger from the left side came just a minute after the re-start, and Swarthmore tacked on two more in a first-half deluge that ended with the hosts ahead 4-1. The Garnet added one more in the latter stages of the second half.
Swarthmore only outshot the Bears, 13-7, but was deadly in accuracy. The home side earned the only four corners of the night.
Amaral matched sophomore Jacob Helwig and freshman Aiden Cooper with two shots to lead Ursinus (0-6-2, 0-3), finding the back of the net for the first time since last September against Kean.
The assist was the first career point for Adeniyi.
Senior Brandon Lillian made one save in the first half, with sophomore Matthew Kenwood coming on for two in the second frame.
The Bears continue CC play with a home date against Dickinson on Saturday.
