Shoremen Shut Down Men's Soccer

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – For the first time in five games, the Ursinus College men's soccer team did not need overtime to settle its score. Unfortunately for the Bears, the 90-minute result did not go their way on Saturday, a 2-0 Centennial Conference setback at the hands of Washington College.

The Bears (0-5-2, 0-2) produced only one shot in the first half and could not get untracked against a stout Shoremen defense. Washington College (4-3-1, 1-1) struck in the 30th minute and added another goal in the 59th.

Saturday's contest was the first for Ursinus that was decided by more than one goal.

The Shoremen broke through just shy of the half hour, when Liam Mansfield grabbed a loose ball and sent one into the back of the net.

The home side continued to push after intermission, forcing two saves from senior goalie Brandon Lillian before doubling their advantage as James Strine scored directly from a corner kick.

Sophomore Connor Howse put a shot on frame late in the second half, but the Bears did not mount a consistent threat.

Washington College had a 14-5 advantage in shots and attempted four corners, one of them leading to a goal.

Lillian finished with three saves for the Bears, who continue CC play at Swarthmore on Wednesday.
