Men's Soccer Stung in OT

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Another close game went against the Ursinus College men's soccer team on Saturday as visiting McDaniel netted a golden goal on an overtime free kick for a 1-0 victory in the Centennial Conference opener.

Drake Pew lifted the Green Terror (3-1-1, 1-0) with a 25-yard free kick with 2:10 elapsed in the first extra session, relegating Ursinus (0-4-1, 0-1) to its fourth one-goal defeat of the season – and the second in a row that required overtime.

Both teams had chances in the first half, but no breakthrough was in the cards. Senior John Romero kept McDaniel off the board in the 12th minute, as a header from a corner was played to Pat Palin, who had a clear sight of goal but had his golden opportunity come up empty as Romero booted the ball off the line.

The Bears had their own close shave in the 25th minute, when sophomore Alexis Ayala's deflected shot landed right at the feet of freshman Aidan O'Malley. The rookie lined up a one-timer from the left side of the box, but his right-footed shot from close range rocketed off the cross bar.

Freshman Colin Holtzman had a go from about 45 yards out in the waning seconds of the first period, but McDaniel keeper Aaron Bilble dove to his left to palm away Holtzman's impressive dipping effort as the buzzer sounded.

Ursinus put up eight shots in the second half, doubling McDaniel, but the home side was unable to get one into the back of the net. The Bears survived a scare in the 57th minute as Palin's shot from the top of the box was destined for the twine but bounced off the left post after a cross by James Benjamin.

Senior goalie Brandon Lillian made a great play to thwart another Green Terror chance, racing off his line to block Greyson Brockbank's shot after Brockbank was played in all alone by Pew. Lillian posted five saves on the day, giving him exactly 100 for his career.

When 90 minutes passed without a goal, the teams headed to overtime. Pew wasted little time putting the game to rest, burying a 25-yard blast into the top left corner of the net.

Ursinus held a 12-11 edge in shots in an even contest, while McDaniel took four corner kicks to the hosts' two.
