Men's Soccer Plays River Hawks to Draw

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – After two overtime periods, Ursinus men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw with Susquehanna on a rainy night at Patterson Field.

Ursinus (0-2-1) knotted the game 1-1 in the 76th minute when sophomore Braden Burns capitalized on a loose ball. Burns got just enough on a spinning, soft kick to sneak it by Susquehanna keeper Ben King.

The Bears had a few chances in the extra sessions but were unable to net a golden goal.

The first half didn't feature any real scoring threats until Susquehanna (0-3-1) got on the scoreboard in the 34th minute. River Hawks defender Kyle Trainor broke a scoreless deadlock. Dakota Dobrovich-Fago set up Trainor on a lead pass to the top of the box before Trainor put a shot into the back of the net.

Early in the second half, Susquehanna's Alex Graul had a scoring opportunity after receiving a lead pass but took a shot wide of the net. Moments later Graul was on a run toward a lead ball behind the Ursinus backline and Bears keeper Brandon Lillian came out to challenge at the top of the box.

A penalty kick was then awarded to Graul, who blasted the spot kick toward the left side of the net. But Lillian denied Graul's kick before making yet another fabulous save of the one-timer off the rebound.

With about ten minutes remaining in regulation, Lillian saved a dangerous, point-blank header off a long set-piece. Moments later, Ursinus couldn't take advantage of an empty net as King came out to defend a ball down the line.

In the first overtime, freshman Aiden Cooper took a shot that was tipped by the keeper just wide. Graul broke free on a counter attack but lost his footing in the box, sending a shot into Lillian coming out to challenge.

In the second overtime, Ursinus sophomore Alexis Ayala sent a long, dangerous shot on goal but a leaping save by King kept the game tied.

The Bears led in the shots category by a 15 to 11 count. Each team put six shots on goal. Goalies Lillian and King each made five saves apiece.

Ursinus is back in action Wednesday for a 4 p.m. away match against Neumann.
