Men's Soccer upsets Swarthmore, 2-1

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – On a night when Ursinus College men's soccer honored their senior class, it was that senior class that came up the biggest.

Senior forward Chris Polster (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) scored two goals, non bigger than an unassisted blast in the 33rd minute as the Bears (3-8-3, 2-3-1 Centennial) upset ninth-ranked Swarthmore (10-3, 4-2 Centennial) 2-1 Saturday night.

Polster also scored in the third minute of the game on an assist from sophomore forward Ricky Griffith (Audubon, Pa./Methacton) as the Bears defeated a ranked team for the first time in 17 tries dating back to 2002.

Polster scored on a header for his first goal right in front of Swarthmore goalkeeper David D'Annunzio after Griffth's cross.

Swarthmore would tie the score at 1-all in the 28th minute as Fabian Castro scored on a header from Robert Contreras IV, followed by Polster's goal just 4:40 left.

From there, senior goalkeeper Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) made eight saves on 24 Garnet shots. In the second half, a combination of Alfieri's saves, several of them point blank, and Ursinus ability to bend but don't break on Swarthmore's pressure that led to the win.

Ursinus will host Kean next Tuesday night.
