On The "Mark"

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Paced by four goals from Mark Stratton, the Ursinus College men's lacrosse team opened its home schedule with a 12-5 win over Kenyon on Saturday afternoon at Patterson Field.

Stratton scored two goals in each half, as Ursinus (3-0) also got two goals and three assists from Jake Weber in the win.

The Bears outshot the Lords (2-2) 19-3 in the first quarter on their way to a 40-34 advantage on shots and a 38-25 edge on ground balls.

Kenyon was led by two goals from Alex Lopez and two assists from J.T. Meyer.

Ursinus took a 3-0 lead after one quarter on goals from Stratton, Weber and Steve Smyrl. Weber assisted on the first goal and Smyrl's goal at 1:30 left for the 3-0 lead. Stratton's first goal, the first goal of the game, as an extra man goal with 7:48 left in the game. Ursinus was 3-for-7 on extra-man opportunities in the game.

The Bears would take a 5-1 lead into halftime on goals by Stratton and Ian Desenberg, with Desenberg scoring his first collegiate goal with 2:25 left in the second quarter.

Ursinus took its largest lead of the game at 6-1, 50 seconds into the second half on a goal by Mike Neal.

In the fourth quarter, Kenyon would get to within three at 7-4 on a goal by Robert Jacobs, but Ursinus would score the next four goals including two straight extra-man goals. The last was a goal by Weber with 11:45 left in the game on an assist by Steev Mussoline.

Individually, goalkeeper Brian Neff had 17 saves as did Kenyon goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson. Ursinus faceoff specialist James Fairchild had five ground balls as he went 13-for-20 from the X.

Ursinus will host Montclair on Wednesday night.
