MLax downs Widener, 7-6

CHESTER, Pa. – Ursinus got two goals each from sophomore attack Mark Stratton (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) and freshman attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) as the Bears (2-0) defeated Widener (2-2) 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon in men's lacrosse action.

Sophomore attack Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) scored goal and had two assists as the Bears won their second straight to start the season.

Panaccione scored what turned out to be the game-winner with 8:15 left in the fourth quarter, while the Ursinus defensive unit stepped up again in the final minute, holding Widener to just one shot at the goal.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Stratton with 5:19 left on an assist from Smyrl, while Smyrl scored with 2:03 left in the first stanza.

Widener would rally to score three straight goals, but, Ursinus took a 4-3 halftime lead as Panaccione scored with 2:53 left, while sophomore midfielder Ian Moore (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) scored on an assist from Smryl with just one second left.

After Widener tied the score again 51 seconds into the second half, junior midfielder Nile Thompson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) and Stratton scored goals in the third. Stratton's goal, on an assist from Jake Weber, with 31 seconds left made the score 6-4.

Individually, sophomore defender Ryan Ridinger (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) had four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was 2-for-5 on faceoffs.

Freshman goalkeeper Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) made eight saves in the win.

Ursinus goes to Richard Stockton on Saturday.
