COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a 13-10 win over Messiah on a windy Patterson Field on Saturday, marking the fourth straight year the Bears have won their opener.

Sophomore midfielder Jake Weber (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored three goals and added an assist, while freshman attack Logan Panaccione (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) joined sophomore attacks Mike Neal (Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) and Steve Smyrl (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) in scoring two goals while adding an assist on the day.

Messiah was led by two goals from senior midfielder Heath Kupecky, who also chipped in with two assists.

With the score tied at 2-all late in the first quarter, Ursinus went on a 4-0 run to go up 6-2 with 12:56 left in the half. Sophomore midfielder Ian Moore (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) scored two goals during the run while Neal scored an extra-man goal at 2:29.

Messiah responded back with three straight goals, as Hupecky capped the run with 7:28 left in the second quarter to pull Messiah within one at 6-5.

Goals from Weber and Smyrl gave Ursinus an 8-5 lead as Weber scored unassisted at 5:43, followed by Smyrl's goal at 3:59.

Leading 8-6 at intermission, Ursinus outscored Messiah 3-1 in the third period capped by a last-second goal from Panaccione with 1.8 left on a pass from Neal that gave Ursinus an 11-7 lead.

Messiah responded again as the Falcons scored three straight to start the fourth, including two goals while Ursinus was a man-down. Kupecky's goal with 10:09 left put Messiah within one at 11-10.

With 6:02 left, Ursinus was whistled for a illegal body check that put the Bears a man-down for three minutes. During that three minutes, the Ursinus defensive unit kept the Falcons off the board. In fact, Ursinus added one more goal with 49 second left to ice the game.

Individually, Panaccione and Moore had five ground balls with Panaccione and sophomore defender Ryan Ridinger (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) each getting two caused turnovers.

In goal, freshman Brian Neff (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata) made 15 saves in his first collegiate game.

Ursinus heads to Widener on Wednesday afternoon.
