MLax headed to playoffs with 6-3 win over Muhlenberg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the first time in school history, the Ursinus College men's lacrosse team is headed to the Centennial Conference playoffs. Via a 6-3 hard-fought win over Muhlenberg, combined with a Gettysburg win over McDaniel earlier in the afternoon, the Bears earned the fourth seed in the tournament and will travel to top-seed Dickinson on Friday afternoon.

Saturday's contest, which was senior day and the regular-season finale in addition to being the final lacrosse game on Snell Field as the team will move to Patterson Field next season, was a defensive showcase for Ursinus who held Muhlenberg (5-9, 2-6 Centennial) to just four shots in the first half and forced 33 turnovers.

Ursinus (9-5, 4-4 Centennial) got two goals and an assist from junior midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) while senior midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) added in two goals for the Bears, who held a commanding 39-16 lead on shots and was 25-for-26 on clears.

Ursinus was able to take a 4-0 lead midway through the second period and had a 5-1 lead at intermission as Gillen scored his second goal of the game with 1:16 left on an extra man opportunity. After

Muhlenberg scored twice in the third quarter to cut the lead to 5-3, Ursinus got a goal from Ocampo via an assist from senior long stick midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic) with 6:34 left to put the game out of reach.

As noted, the game was a defensive showcase for Ursinus, as senior defender Logan Duffie (Glen Mills, Pa./Penncrest) had five caused turnovers, while sophomore goalkeeper Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) posted seven saves and seven ground balls. Freshman faceoff specialist Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was 7-for-12 at the X for Ursinus.
