Deja vu for Men's Lax in 9-8 win over Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Different year, same result.

The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team defeated Washington by the same score it did last year, 9-8, at Roy Kirby Stadium Wednesday night. With the win, the Bears pushed their record to 8-2 and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference, while Washington fell to 4-5 and 2-3 in league play. The Bears also remained one game behind first-place Dickinson with just four conference games left.

Sophomore attack Taylor Allen (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint) and sophomore attack Brian Weil (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers) each scored two goals for the Bears, while junior midfielder Mike Bloom (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had a goal and two assists. Allen scored what turned out to be the game winner with 2:37 left, which marked two goals in 70 seconds for Ursinus. His goal was assisted by Bloom.

Neither team had more than a one-goal lead throughout the game, as the lead changed hands four times. Bloom gave the Bears the lead for good with 3:47 left in the final quarter to make the score 8-7. Ursinus battled back from two one-goal deficits.

Individually, sophomore goalkeeper Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had a team-high eight groundballs and made 14 saves in the win. Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was 9-for-14 on faceoffs and had six ground balls.

Ursinus will host Gettysburg on Saturday at 3 p.m.
