COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – It was all systems go for the Ursinus College men's lacrosse team on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bears scored three goals in every period in a 12-3 defeat of Wesley in non-conference play.
Ursinus junior midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) continued his hot start as he scored five goals in the win, pushing his season total to eight. Ocampo scored all five of his goals in the first half as the Bears had as much as an 11 goal lead.
Ursinus (2-0) scored the first three goals of the game, starting with a goal from junior midfielder Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) with 7:50 left in the first period on an assist from sophomore attack Taylor Allen (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Bluepoint).
Ocampo then scored two unassisted goals, at 6:23 and at 3:26, for a 3-0 lead. Wesley (1-2), who was outshot 48-18, got on the board with 50 seconds left in the first as senior attack Justin D'Alonzo scored on an assist from freshman midfielder Drew Hammer.
Ocampo then went on a 3-0 scoring run of his own, starting with a goal at 13:42 on an assist from freshman attack Jordan Demcher (Springfield, Pa./Springfield (DELCO)), then another goal at 8:42 on an assist from senior midfielder Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) for a 5-1 lead. His third goal of the period came unassisted at 2:30.
Allen scored his first of two goals on the day 10 seconds into the second half, on an assist from junior midfielder Andrew Kirlin (Doylestown, Pa./C.B. East) for a 7-1 lead. Following goals from freshman midfielder Jordan McGinty (Glenmoore, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Gillen,
Ursinus had a 9-1 lead heading into the final quarter.
Allen, junior attack Andrew Bean (Tampa, Fla./Freedom) and freshman defender Nile Thompson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) each had goals in the final quarter, while Kirlin and Allen added in assists.
Wesley put in two man-up goals in the latter part of the fourth quarter, as junior midfielder Eric Crumbock and Hammer got on the board.
Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was 12-for-16 on faceoffs on the day, also picking up a team-best seven ground balls. In goal, sophomore Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had nine saves, while Wesley netminder Sean Mathews had 19 saves.
Ursinus hosts Messiah on Saturday.
