Men's Lacrosse wins 2011 opener, 5-3, over Marymount

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team won their 2011 opener on Saturday morning, taking a 5-3 decision over Marymount (Va.) in a game played at Georgetown University.

Despite the early morning start, the Bears broke open a late 3-3 tie by scoring two goals in a 2:14 span to take the win.

Junior midfielder Jeff Ocampo (Palm Coast, Fla./Mantanzas) scored three goals, including what turned out to be the game winner with 12:24 left in the fourth quarter on an assist from senior Pat Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun). Ocampo scored goals in the first and third quarters, in addition to his game-winner in the final period.

His first goal came with 6:41 left in the first period which was the first goal of the game. After Marymount's Chris Wascak scored with 5:55 left in the second, the game was a 1-all tie at intermission.

Wascak's second goal came with 9:11 left in the third which gave the Saints a 2-1 lead. Ocampo tied the score at 2-all with his goal at 5:26 left on the clock in the third.

Ursinus took a 3-2 lead 10 seconds into the final quarter as senior long stick midfielder Ernie Constantine (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Dominic) scored unassisted. The Saints tied the score at 3-3 with 14:11 left as Connor Kellogg scored his first goal of the game.

Following Ocampo's goal, sophomore attack Brian Weil (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) scored unassisted at 10:10 for the final 5-3 margin.

Freshman midfielder Shawn Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was very successful in the circle, as he was 9-for-12 on faceoffs on the afternoon. Defensively, senior Tom Adelsberger (Sea Isle City, N.Y./St. Augustine) had seven ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Josh Baker (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) made eight saves in the win.

Ursinus opens its home schedule on Wednesday against Wesley.
