RISING SUN, Md. – The Ursinus College men's golf team made great strides on the second day of its spring opener, trimming nearly 40 strokes from its opening effort at the two-day Revolutionary Collegiate Classic.
Confronting strong winds and chilly temperatures on Saturday, the Bears struggled to a team score of 375 at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, but took advantage of the nicer weather on Sunday to fire in a 336.
Ursinus wound up fifth in the six-team field at its annual tournament, which was won by Arcadia with a team score of 648. Muhlenberg was four strokes back in second, while the Bears shot a 711 to finish 15 strokes behind Widener in fourth.
Freshman Kyle Quagliero was the top performer for the Bears' eight-man contingent, carding a 79 on Sunday for a 36-hole 168 to tie for ninth overall. The rookie was one of seven golfers to shoot in the 70s on the second day of the tournament.
Junior Ryan Hodgdon tied for 16th to finish in the top half of a 34-man field. Hodgdon shot 86 in the first round and 88 in the second for a two-day 174. Classmate Brian Barrett was right on Hodgdon's heels with a 176, which included an 80 on Sunday; the junior fired a 33 on the front nine, highlighted by four birdies.
Junior Daniel Schlitt (104-89—193) and freshman John Murray (100-94—194) each made major improvements from round one to round two, with the latter breaking 100 for the first time in his collegiate career on Sunday.
Freshman Kai Toomey (109-100—209) and sophomore Ryan Moliken (131-116—247) and Liam Bradley (131-129—260) rounded out the Ursinus contingent.
The Bears resume play on April 1 at the Lebanon Valley Invitational.
