Swarthmore Swarms Men's Basketball

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – No. 11 Swarthmore jumped on top of the Ursinus College men's basketball team early and never let the Bears off the mat in an 84-62 Centennial Conference decision on Wednesday.

The Garnet (19-3, 13-2) needed just over two minutes to open up a 10-2 lead and never looked back, leading wire to wire in regaining sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

With the loss, Ursinus (14-8, 10-5) fell two games behind Johns Hopkins and Franklin & Marshall for third place and now leads Dickinson by one game for the number four seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Cam Wiley, the reigning CC Player of the Year, had a game-high 29 points and Zack Yonda added 21 for the Garnet.

Yonda had 11 points in the first four minutes, by which time Swarthmore had attained a double-digit lead. The visitors made 12 of their first 15 shots and scored on their first eight possessions and went into halftime leading 52-30. The Bears were unable to mount any sort of rally in the second stanza.

Ursinus came in ranked in the nation's top-50 in field-goal percentage, but struggled to a season-low 26.7 percent (16 for 60) and were just 6 for 21 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range and 24 for 42 at the line (57.1 percent). The Bears committed only nine turnovers, but were unable to keep the Garnet in check as Swarthmore owned large advantages in the paint (33-16) and on second-chance points (15-4).

Junior Eric Williams Jr. paced the Bears with 13 points but was 3 for 13 from the floor, while senior Remi Janicot gave the home side plenty of toughness with 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior Zach Quattro had 10 points, all in the first half, and added six rebounds while junior Matt Williams netted a season-high eight markers.

Junior Paul Cottam swished a foul-line jumper with 1:56 to play for his first points of the year.

The Bears head to Carlisle for another key CC tilt with Dickinson on Saturday.
