SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Will Gates pumped in a game-high 31
points as the Garnet (1-5, 1-1 Centennial) handed Ursinus (3-3, 0-2
Centennial) a 74-68 loss in Centennial Conference men’s
basketball play on Saturday afternoon.
The win by the Garnet was first victory over the Bears since the
1997-98 season.
Jordan Martinez added in 12 for the Garnet, followed by 11 from
Ryan Carmichael.
For Ursinus, senior guard Keith Page (Manchester,
England/Blair Academy) had 15 points, while junior guard
Matt Hilton (Lewistown, Pa./Lewistown Area)
scoring 14 points. Senior guard Remy Cousart (Philadelphia,
Pa./Holy Ghost) added in 11.
Swarthmore held Ursinus to just 36.8 percent shooting from the
floor (21-for-57).
Ursinus took an early 7-2 lead in the contest on a four-point play
by freshman guard Matt Donahue (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity
School) with 18:07 left.
Swarthmore answered with a 15-0 run to go up 17-7 with 11:44 left
on a layup by Carmichael. Ursinus would battle back to within two
at 19-17 on a jumper by Hilton with 6:53 left but could not retake
the lead.
Trailing by one at halftime (27-26), Ursinus got its last lead at
37-36 with 15:02 left on a pair of foul shots by freshman forward
John Ward (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).
Swarthmore took the lead, but, Ursinus tied it one last time at
47-all with 8:50 left on a three-pointer by Page. Swarthmore then
went up five and never looked back.
Ursinus held a 39-34 edge in rebounding, with Page, Cousart and
sophomore guard J.J. Rapczynski (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet
Valley) each having seven rebounds. Gates picked up a
game-high 17 rebounds for the Garnet.
Both teams made 22 field goals, and seven three-pointers in the
contest. But, Swarthmore was 23-for-34 from the line, while Ursinus
was 17-for-21.
