Gymnastics Soars at Towson Quad

TOWSON, Md. – For the third time in as many meets, the Ursinus College gymnastics team registered a new season high with a well-rounded effort and continued excellence on the floor at a quad meet hosted by Towson on Friday night.

The Bears shined bright under the lights of a Division I arena that they also shared with North Carolina and Yale, scoring a season-best 187.425. The Tar Heels tallied 194.600 to edge the host Tigers (194.275), with the Bulldogs taking third at 192.050.

Thanks to another incredible performance by sophomore Eleanor LaFountain, Ursinus was phenomenal on the floor. The Bears earned a team score of 48.025, crossing the 48-point mark for the first time since netting 48.100 at Rutgers last January.

Five days removed from winning the event with a 9.725, LaFountain set the bar even higher with a 9.775 that placed her sixth overall in a stacked field. The sophomore earned a 9.75 from one judge and a 9.80 from the other in finishing behind only three gymnasts from UNC and one each from Towson and Yale.

LaFountain had plenty of help from her teammates, who have combined to make the Bears the best floor outfit in Division III in the early portion of the season. Three other Ursinus gymnasts eclipsed 9.50 on the event, led by a 9.675 from senior Heather Brubaker. Senior Alexandra Puryear earned a 9.575, and sophomore Skylar Haas posted a 9.550. Senior Kelsey Stewart was right behind with a 9.450.

After struggling to a 45.325 team score in its home opener against West Chester, Ursinus improved its performance on the uneven bars by leaps and bounds with a 46.775 that ranked as the team's second-best event for the evening.

Senior Amanda Palladino was again the Bears' top bars star, logging a 9.625. Brubaker was second on the squad at 9.350, with Stewart (9.300), junior Lindsay Rush (9.275), and freshman Abigail Schwerdt (9.225) all recording strong scores.

Puryear headlined an extremely balanced showing on the vault with a 9.400. Four of the other five competitors were within a tenth of a point, as Stewart garnered a 9.375 and freshman Danielle Terrenzio a 9.350. LaFountain and Rush – a native of nearby Joppa – each tallied 9.300.

Haas was a standout on the beam, scoring 9.500 to land just outside the top-10 individually.

Brubaker totaled a career-best 37.225 in the all-around, good for sixth overall.
