Gymnastics Sweeps NCGA Weekly Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Ursinus College gymnastics team swept the NCGA East Region weekly awards, with freshman Skylar Haas being named Specialist of the Week and junior Alexandra Puryear claiming All-Around Gymnast of the Week honors.

Both played starring roles as the Bears grabbed top billing in a quad meet at Ithaca on Sunday, a competition that included Division III's two highest-scoring teams at the time in Ursinus and Brockport State.

Haas registered a collegiate-best 9.750 to finish in a tie for fourth on the beam and help Ursinus ring up a season-high 48.325 on that event, not far off the program record of 48.550 established during the 2015 NCGA East championships. Haas also tallied a 9.300 on the floor exercise. The weekly laurel is the first for Haas, who has scored at least a 9.675 on the beam in three of her last four outings.

Puryear is the All-Around Gymnast of the Week for the second time this season after combining for a 37.225. She tied for first place with a 9.800 on the beam, improving her season average to 9.6500 on that event, while finishing third on the bars with a 9.375, her second-best score of the year. Puryear garnered a 9.325 on the vault and an 8.725 on the floor.

Puryear is averaging an all-around score of 37.8625 for the year, good for fifth in the country. She ranks fifth on the beam (9.6500) and 11th on the floor (9.6688).

Ursinus currently ranks fourth in Division III with an SAS (season average score) of 190.3063. Brockport tops the national charts at 190.7000, followed by Wisconsin-La Crosse (190.6313) and Wisconsin-Whitewater (190.4688) in a tight bunch.

The gymnastics team closes out its home schedule with a dual meet against Brockport State on Sunday.
