Field Hockey Dominates Diplomats

Field Hockey Dominates Diplomats

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Four days removed from a monumental victory at national powerhouse TCNJ, the Ursinus College field hockey team treated a large Family Day Crowd to an even bigger statement.

Six different players got on the scoresheet as the 15th-ranked Bears opened Centennial Conference play with a resounding 6-0 rout of No. 8 Franklin & Marshall, putting a big bow on a perfect week with a pair of top-10 triumphs. Saturday's explosion marked the largest margin of victory in program history for Ursinus against its archrival and sent a clear message that its dreams of conference glory are entirely realistic.

Ursinus (5-2, 1-0) got the party started midway through the first quarter, when Laura Rothschild scored on an assist from Amanda Groeling. Later in the period, Jordan Moore deposited a feed from Amanda Panati to make it 2-0.

The Bears got right back to it in the second quarter, when Groeling scored a goal of her own on a pass from Carroll. Suzanna Toldeo Cornman netted a fourth on her second penalty stroke of the season, and the hosts went storming into halftime with a 4-0 advantage.

It only got better from there. Rothschild assisted on a goal by Carroll, and Gabriela Howell capped the scoring in the final minute of the third quarter on an assist from Moore.

Carroll, Groeling, Moore, and Rothschild all produced a goal and an assist for the well-balanced Bears.

Despite the lopsided score, the Diplomats managed to put up 12 shots - to the Bears' 19 - but were turned aside by four saves from Jordan Ulsh

When the ball did get past Ulsh, her defense was there to back her up. Erin McIlhenny - who tied her own program record with three defensive saves in the win at TCNJ, made another one on Saturday, and Maeve Montgomery added the first of her career when she batted a deflected shot out of the air as the buzzer sounded.

Another top-10 win in the bag, the Bears go for a third in as many games when they travel to take on No. 5 Messiah on Wednesday.
