Carroll Clinches! Buzzer Beater Goal Hands Field Hockey 1-0 win at Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa.  –  With the number three seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs on the line, junior Devon Carroll clinched it for the Bears at the buzzer to give the Ursinus College field hockey team a 1-0 victory at Bryn Mawr. The goal marked Carroll's team-high 14th of the season and her third game-winner.

Combined with Johns Hopkins' victory over Franklin & Marshall, Ursinus will meet the second-seeded Diplomats in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Friday in Baltimore.

The Owls came out firing, but the Bears defense was there to fend off the early attack. Bryn Mawr sent four shots towards the cage in the first two minutes of the game, but none made it through as the Bears defense blocked all four.

A penalty corner by the Bears (11-6, 7-3) resulted in their first shot of the day but it was blocked as the two teams headed to the second quarter scoreless.

Bryn Mawr kept the pressure on in the second, earning four penalty corners, all of which were turned away with the final one resulting in a save by Frey. The Bears offense responded, earning a pair of penalty corners of their own, both of which ended in saves.

Despite trailing 11-5 in shots, the Bears led 4-1 in shots on goal at the half.

The Bears controlled the second half of the second quarter and kept it going coming out into the third. An early penalty corner resulted in a shot by Erin Saybolt that was blocked and then Devon Carroll fired a shot on goal that was saved, keeping the game scoreless. Ursinus had two more penalty corners in the third but were unable to capitalize.

Both teams traded possessions early in the fourth quarter as the Owls had a pair of shots blocked while Gemma Dufoe had a shot blocked on the other end as well. With less than three minutes to play, the game remained scoreless and looked headed for overtime after the Bears were unable to finish on two late penalty corners.

However, with 10 seconds remaining, the Bears went on a final push. Carroll dribbled down the middle of the field. With little time to spare, she fired a shot on goal that was deflected and found the back of the cage to give the Bears the number three seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs.
