Field Hockey Nipped by F&M in Double OT

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College field hockey team and Franklin & Marshall continued their annual tradition of tense battles that go down to the last second on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Diplomats extended their recent trend of coming out on top.

Lily Mynott scored the second of her two goals with 7:18 remaining in double overtime to give No. 8 F&M a 2-1 victory over the Bears in another evenly matched struggle. Six of the teams' last seven meetings have been decided by a single goal, including three in overtime, and the Diplomats have won four straight and five of six in the Centennial Conference's showcase series.

With the victory, F&M (11-1, 5-0) remained tied with Johns Hopkins atop the CC standings and likely eliminated Ursinus from contending to host the conference tournament.

In a tug-of-war that ended dead even in shots (20-20) and nearly so in corners (12-10, UC) and saves (10-9, UC), Erin Saybolt gave the home side – clad in a lighter shade for its annual Pink Game – a 1-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Following a corner by Gabriela Howell, Kayla Paulson passed from the left side of the circle to the top for Saybolt, who ripped a shot into the back of the cage for her eighth goal of the year.

After a quiet third quarter, Ursinus went into the final frame hoping to hold on. It was not to be though, as the Diplomats polished off a flurry of activity in front of the Bears' cage with Mynott blasting home a rebound with 6:43 to play.

F&M pushed hard for a regulation winner, but Addie Frey made three critical saves to send the game into overtime.

The Bears dominated the first extra session, racking up five corners and six shots (two of them on target), but the Diplomats did not bend. Locked in a second overtime, Frey got her pads on a hard shot by Erin Coverdale from right on the doorstep. The ball bounced up and off the crossbar, and Mynott was at the right place at the right time to swat home the rebound in mid-air and give the blue and white a walk-off winner.

The two-goal outing gave Mynott a CC-leading 18 on the season.

Devon Carroll finished with a team-high eight shots (four on cage) for the Bears, while Saybolt had five. Coverdale put six of her eight attempts on target, and all four of Mynott's were directed at the cage.

Frey recorded 10 saves for the Bears, including six in the fourth quarter alone, while Christina made nine to earn the victory.

Ursinus picks back up with a road game at Muhlenberg on Wednesday.
